Bernard K. Waugh, 68, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning, March 25, at his home in Vernon, NY.
"Bernie” was born on May 16, 1941, in Denmark, N.Y., a son of the late Cyril and Shirley (Griffis) Waugh, and attended Hermon Dekalb Central School. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964.Bernie then started the B.K. Waugh racing Stable at Vernon Downs, where he owned, trained and drove some of the top standardbreds of the sport. He raced at various racetracks throughout New York, but Vernon Downs was his home. In 1984 Bernie gave up his involvement in harness racing to fight his battle with Huntington’s disease. His work career moved on to Walmart, where he retired from in December 2009 after fifteen years of service. He was a former member of the United States Trotting Association and other harness horse organizations. Surviving are his companion of 44 years, R. Thomas (Tom) Suarez of Vernon; his four brothers and two sisters and their families, Gordon Waugh of Vernon, Elon Waugh of Croghan, N.Y., Henry Waugh of Edwards, N.Y., Fred Waugh of Rocky Mountain, N.C.; Jane Zehr of Indian River, N.Y., and Linda Zehr of Castorland, N.Y.; his extended family, Fred and Shirley McCormick and all of the Suarez family, also included are many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front St., Vernon. Mr. Waugh’s funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. (Vernon Downs)
