Bettor files lawsuit

An interesting lawsuit has been filed in connection with the Thoroughbred filly Sweet Catomine's fifth-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby April 9. The lawsuit alleges that the filly's owner, trainer, and others committed fraud by not disclosing the horse's health problems before the race.

According to Associated Press, the lawsuit was filed by a bettor who bet on Sweet Catomine. Prior to the race, trainer Julio Canini, who has since been fired, said the horse was training well for the race, but afterward owner Martin Wygod said he almost scratched her because of a number of health problems.

"All of this information was not communicated to the betting public. Of course, had this information been disseminated before the race, nobody would have bet on her and she wouldn't have been the race favorite," said the attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the bettor.
