Wire To Wire columnist Andrew Cohen traveled to Tioga Downs recently to watch his 3-year-old pacing filly race, and while the filly's winning streak ended, he writes in this week's column that he found the track to be one of the bright spots on the New York harness racing scene.
Cohen also cites a recent report that says Tioga has the best on-track attendance of any venue in New York state. "Tioga offered me and my highly-cynical eye precisely the kind of atmosphere designed both to keep modest fans coming out to watch the races but also to generate a harder-core fan base that could ultimately turn into that much-needed new generation of owners, trainers, drivers and breeders," Cohen writes. "It was a cross between what’s best about Goshen—the relaxed informal feeling—and what’s best about the Meadowlands—good action on the track."
