Bier, Scarpias win three

Return Home
May 05, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The 6-year-old New Zealand-bred pacing mare Tintabella N visited the winner’s circle for the fourth time in her last five starts after taking the featured $10,000 Fillies and Mare Isle Mile I Pace at Pompano Park on Friday. It was one of three victories on the night for co-owner and driver Daryl Bier and trainer Gus Scarpias.

Guided from post two by driver Daryl Bier, Tintabella N settled in a loose pocket through the early stages of the Friday feature as Wilma Hall (Bruce Ranger) took the field through opening fractions of :28 and :57.2.

As Wilma Hall showed the way down the backstretch, Hypnotize (David Ingraham) was angled off the pylons to attack first-over with My Metallica (Wally Hennessey) drafting her cover, but the daughter of Artiscape stalled and began to retreat, sending My Metallica back to the inside.

Wilma Hall reached the three-quarters marker in 1:25.2 and entered the stretch with a 1 1/4-length advantage over Tintabella N, who was tipped to the outside by Bier. Almost simultaneously, My Metallica was angled to the three-path by Hennessey to begin her rush down the lane.

Tintabella N wrestled the lead away from Wilma Hall at the edge of the toteboard, but the mare still faced a challenge from My Metallica, who was picking up momentum down the center of the track.

With the finish line rapidly approaching, Tintabella N dug in gamely to hold off My Metallica, prevailing by a head at the wire while stopping the clock in a seasonal best 1:53.

Tintabella N returned $13.60, $3.20 for the victory. My Metallica paid $2.40 for second. With the scratches of Montana Moonlite A and Always, there was no show wagering offered on the race.

Owned by Glenn Del Russo and Daryl Bier, and trained by Gus Scarpias, Tintabella N has won 13 of 31 starts since being imported from New Zealand after her 2005 season.

The victory by Tintabella N was the second of the evening for the team of Bier and Scarpias, who won three races on the card.

The tandem scored in the night’s second race with the 10-year-old pacing mare Chip And Gale A ($3.80) in 1:54.2, before returning to take the seventh event on the program with Secret Story A ($35.80) in 1:55.2. (Pompano Park)
