Big crowd for Tioga opener

Tioga Downs opened its 2008 racing season on Saturday, May 3, with a crowd of more than 6,200 in attendance.

The 3-year old trotting filly Patti Pain made the inaugural trip of 2008 to the Tioga winner’s circle with fan favorite Mike Simons in the sulky. It was the second win of the career for Patti Painm, who established a new lifetime mark of 2:00 in taking the opening division of the Nichols True Value Trotting Series.

Jim Morrill Jr. turned in five wins on the night’s ten race card including the $15,000 Open Pace with All Shuttle. Morrill sent the 5-year old Space Shuttle gelding to the front and never looked back en route to a gate to wire victory in 1:55.2 for trainer Ed Hart. It was the fifth win of the season for All Shuttle who is owned by Robert Hiemstra or Bloomingdale, NJ.
Tioga posted its largest simulcast handle to date, broke records on the gaming floor, and also soared past its highest food and beverage revenue with the large crowds.

“It’s exciting and also refreshing to see the crowds come out to enjoy opening night at Tioga, this makes all the hard work worth it. It is amazing how many fans show up and truly love watching harness racing in the southern tier” said Jason Settlemoir, VP of Racing and Simulcast. (Tioga)
