Always A Virgin, coming off his third-place finish in the Little Brown Jug final last week, captured the first of three divisions of the $280,000 Bluegrass for 3-year-old colt pacers Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile. Brian Sears drove the son of Western Ideal to the 1:49.1 victory, brushing to the front past the quarter and leading the rest of the distance.
Running Book finished second for Mark MacDonald with Booze Cruzin third for Dave Palone.
The win was the 10th of the year in 15 starts for the beaten favorite in this year's Jug. The Joe Holloway trainee missed equaling his career best by just two-fifths of a second in the Bluegrass. Bluewood Stable, Roll The Dice Stable and Val D'Or Farms share ownership of the winner of more than $693,000.
New York Sire Stakes champion Kenneth J, returning to the site where he set his freshman mark of 1:50.3 last year, was a 1:49.3 winner in the second $93,000 Bluegrass division. Ron Pierce directed the son of Bettor's Delight to his eighth win in 14 starts this year over Real Class (Dave Palone) and Forensic Z Tam (Pat Lachance).
Linda Tocano trains Kenneth J, who is named for owner Ken Jacobs' grandson. With 15 wins in 25 career starts, Kenneth J's earnings now surpass $1.1 million.
Yankee Skyscaper, racing the first time for trainer Erv Miller, rallied from far back at the top of the stretch to win the third $94,000 division in 1:49.1. Dave Palone was in the sulky as Yankee Skyscaper charged past Digital Z Tam (Mike Lachance) and Watta Hotshot (Brian Sears) for his fourth win of the year.
The time was a career best for the son of Artiscape who is owned by the Yankee Skyscaper Partners. Now an eight-time winner in 21 lifetime starts, Yankee Skyscaper has earnings of more than $818,000.
"I thought if I gave him more room I could get him to relax," said Palone in the winner's circle. "Erv and I agreed that the quieter we could keep him the better he is. You can see he has the ability it was a matter of getting him squared away."
