About 3,000 people were waiting at the door when Vernon Downs opened its video gaming floor at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Vernon officials had expected 3,000-4,000 people to visit the New York gaming facility for the grand opening in the morning until the facility closed at 2 a.m. this morning, but some 8,000 came through the doors, according to Jason Settlemoir, vice president of racing operations and simulacasting at Vernon Downs.

Settlemoir said $3,476,865 was wagered using the 777 video gaming machines.

“It’s exciting. The final piece of the puzzle for these two racetracks (Vernon and sister track Tioga Downs) has been put together. With four (track) openings in less than six months it’s been exciting,” Settlemoir said.

The crowd of 8,000 comes close to the 10,000 people who showed up for the racing grand opening Aug. 31. According to simulcast director Jim Klein, handle numbers appear to be up compared to when the plant last raced in 2003.
