The Write Stuff Stable, a group that includes trainer Ernie Gaskin, The Horseman And Fair World’s Greg Schuler, and Nicole Kraft of Hoof Beats, had a winner on Wednesday night at Hoosier Park with JD’s Awesome Al. In addition to giving the Write Stuff Stable a victory, the win came on the day of Kraft's birthday.
JD’s Awesome Al, a 6-year-old gelding by Full Of Fun, turned in a huge :27.2 final quarter rally to win a $4,500 Mini Series leg limited to Indiana-sired horses that race for a $6,000 claiming tag or are NW of $1,000 in last six. Driven by Peter Wrenn, JD’s Awesome Al started from post seven and got away 10th in the 12-horse field. He was tenth, 11 ¼ lengths behind the leader, at the half (:55.4) and still 7 ¼ lengths behind at the three-quarter call, but was responding to Wrenn and gobbling up racetrack. He hit the wire in 1:54.1, defeating betting favorite Legal Option, to score in his second start at Hoosier Park this year.
Gaskin’s nephew, Tyler George, trains JD’s Awesome Al, who started his racing career in Indiana but thus far has spent most of it in California. Last year he put together a 4-5-3 record in 39 starts and took a mark of 1:53.4 at Cal Expo.
