Bill would have NJSEA help Big M in transition

February 17, 2011 | Print View

The New Jersey state Assembly is scheduled to vote Thursday on a bill that would allow the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority to help operate the Meadowlands Racetrack during a one-year transition period if a lease agreement is finalized between the state and Jeff Gural.

According to reports, the bill allows “racing to continue without interruption as all the details and licensing involved in the transfer are completed,” according to Assemblyman Ronald Dancer.

The bill would also include any possible sale/lease of Monmouth Park Thoroughbred track. Another bill being discussed in the Assembly is one that would lower the minimum number of live race dates at Freehold to 75, although Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey president Tom Luchento was quoted as saying that the number “sets a baseline” and that he expects “Freehold to race 100 days or more a year.”
