Billy Dobson won the 1,000th race of his career Thursday afternoon at Monticello Raceway, with the milestone event coming with Doubloon.
Last September the 24-year-old Dobson ventured to Monticello Raceway from Michigan and even though he came without any horses it didn’t take much time for the youngster’s talent to be recognized by the local training colony. Though he started slowly he finished the 2008 campaign at the Mighty M with 62 winners and has been winning consistently again this year. Currently he has 34 driving victories.
After winning the third race with Donnie Friedman and Stanley Kaufman’s Against The Best in a time of 2:03.1 to notch win number 999, the stage was set for Dobson’s 1,000th winner. Four more tries in following races proved fruitless but in race number nine Dobson reached his milestone when he guided George Mathar’s Doubloon to a 2:02.3 triumph over the wet racing surface. “I’m sure glad this is over,” a muddy- faced Dobson said in the winner's circle after being presented a blanket denoting his 1,000th career win. “I’ve been keyed-up and nervous wreck about this (milestone victory) for the past four days.” Obviously it didn’t take Dobson long to settle down because victory number 1,001 came in the 12th race on the card when he reined J&R Class Act Stables' Fox Valley Luxor to a 2:00. victory.
