Bingham dies at age 12

The 12-year-old gelding Bingham, a winner of 113 races and $328,688, died Friday, July 29, at Michigan State University's veterinary school. According to trainer Gene Miller, Bingham suffered a severe bout of colic early in the day and Miller and his wife, Linda, had transported him to Michigan State for surgery, but he died soon after arriving.

Bingham's passing is a loss for the Millers as well as the amateur driving community. During the last 10 years Gene Miller and Bingham competed in many Billings amateur driving events at tracks across the country.

"He was a fixture on the Midwest fair circuit as well as in the Billings Series," noted Billings organizer Peter Gerry. "A warhorse, a hero, a legend, Bingham was special. What made him so special is that Gene Miller shared him with so many of us who were privileged to have driven him. He was the Billings peoples' horse and we all came to admire and respect him. He was a consumate campaigner and a good one at that.

"We will all remember the night at the Meadowlands several years ago when from the back of the pack in the Delvin Miller Memorial Driving Championship Gold Cup, Bingham charged down the stretch with Gene in the bike to beat, by an ever so small a margin, Joe Faraldo and his mount," recalled Gerry. "Then last year in the Silver Cup at the Meadowlands on the day Bingham's registered owner, Albert Miller--Gene's dad--passed away, Bingham again circled the field and scored a solid victory with confidence. It was a very emotional victory for all those who were at the Meadowlands that night."
