Blanket finish at Pompano

Return Home
June 05, 2007 | Print View

A compact field of five trotters assembled for Monday’s feature race at Pompano Park, and the highly contentious $15,500 winners-over Trot resulted in a tight three-horse win photo with Railee Possible holding off Muscular and C Le Noir to score his third consecutive victory.

Driven from post four by Dan Clements, Railee Possible rolled off the gate to seize control of the Monday feature, carving out fractions of :29, :59.3, and 1:28.1 before entering the stretch with a 1 ¾-length advantage.

With the finishing line approaching, Railee Possible saw his lead quickly diminish as Muscular (Dave Mercer) and C Le Noir (Wally Hennessey) both made a charge at the leader. The Florida-bred gelding responded by digging in gamely to turn back the challenge of that late closing duo and prevail by a nose in 1:57.

Railee Possible returned $3.20, $3.80 for the victory while C Le Noir, who crossed the wire third but was placed second when Muscular was disqualified for interference, paid $7.80 for second. There was no show wagering available on the race.

Owned by Frank and Inge Smith of Deerfield Beach and trained by Veral Bowman, Railee Possible has prevailed in seven of 14 starts this year, including three straight trips to the winner’s circle. In 2006, the gelding won just five times from 31 seasonal starts.

The win in the Monday feature was the second of the evening for Clements, with both triumphs coming by a nose. The 43-year-old driver also prevailed in race two with the trotter King Triton ($65), who closed from last place to claim victory in the $6,500 trot in 1:58.1. (Pompano Park)
