Blossom Series underway at Woodbine

Return Home
March 22, 2013 | Print View

The inaugural edition of the Blossom Series kicked off Friday evening’s card at Woodbine with a pair of $18,000 divisions. Wildcat Hanna and Belle Boyd found the winner’s circle first for their respective connections. Wildcat Hanna, driven by Sylvain Filion, captured the opening division in 1:55.2 at odds of 12-1. The daughter of Mach Three came from off-the-pace as Burning Beaches (Paul MacDonell) led her six rivals though panels of :28, :57.1 and 1:26.

Filion, positioned second-over around the final turn behind post time favourite, Senorita Santanna (Jody Jamieson), exploded in deep stretch and the two-time winner responded with a :28.3 final quarter to seal the victory. Burning Beaches stayed for second, over In The Wheelhouse (Billy Davis Jr.).

Trained by Tim Gillespie for owners Wildcat Stable and Cj Stable, Wildcat Hanna increased her bankroll to $29,585. She paid $26.50 for the win.

In the second division, heavy favourite, Belle Boyd (Jody Jamieson) found the wire first in 1:54.4.

Bride In A Box (Billy Davis Jr.) was the quickest off the gate to lead her eight rivals past the opening station in :28.3.

The pair would continue to lead past the mid-way point in :57.3 and three-quarters in 1:26.

Belle Boyd began the first-over attack and effortlessly cleared past the tempo setter at the top of the stretch, but Marquise De Sarah (Phil Hudon) was in contention from evacuating the two-hole. The pair separated themselves from the field, but it was Belle Boyd to strike the wire first, by a neck, over Marquise De Sarah. Notalkingback (Rick Zeron) finished third.

Trained and co-owned by Carl Jamieson along with Thomas Kyron and Joanne Morrison, Belle Boyd enjoyed her third career win as her bankroll increased to $63,675. She paid $2.80 to win.

The Blossom Series is for fillies who are non-winners of three races or $15,000 in 2012.

The second leg of the Blossom Series is scheduled for Thursday, April 4, with the $60,000 final slated for Thursday, April 11.
