Blue Mac Lad wins final

Blue Mac Lad moved three wide on the turn for home and drew away to a 2 1/2-length victory in the $175,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes final for 3-year-old trotting colts Thursday night at the Meadowlands. Make You Mine closed strongly for second while DC’s Piggy Bank, who cut the fractions, was third.

Blue Mac Lad, driven by Brian Sears and trained by Trond Smedshammer, trotted the mile in 1:54, a personal best. It was the colt’s first win in three starts this year, third in 11 lifetime outings.

“He’s been finishing real strong last couple of starts,” noted Sears. “I’ve been conservative with him at the beginning of the mile. But he’s really trotting home good. I thought about moving to the front down the backside, but I had a chance to follow some cover. It worked out perfect. He showed he had talent early on but wasn’t able to finish off the season strong. He’s come back pretty good.”

The Hambletonian hopeful is owned by Einari Kalle Vidgren of Iisalmi, Finland.

At two, Blue Mac Lad was the favorite in the $460,000 Peter Haughton final but broke stride in the stretch and was placed eighth.

“He got sore (at two),” Smedshammer explained. “He was the big favorite in Peter Haughton, and I decided to put him away for the year if he pulled that one off. But he screwed up that day, and so I decided to race him a couple of more starts. But it didn’t work out. He’s sounder than he was last year, but he still has a few issues.” (Meadowlands)
