Blur gives Trond threepeat

November 26, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Blur swept into the lead after the opening quarter then held off a late surge by Flawless Bluestone in deep stretch and captured the $500,000 Breeders Crown 3-year-old filly trot, giving the driver-trainer combination of Brian Sears and Trond Smedshammer a sweep of the sophomore trotting events. Just Like Dream and John Campbell were third.

After an opening quarter in :29.2 Sears followed David Miller and Flawless Bluestone to the front of the field and trotted on past the leader, reaching the half in :58.3. Lady Lifter and George Brennan challenged Blur at the 1:27.4 three quarters as the field tightened up for the stretch drive.

Blur stayed strong through the lane and only when Lady Lifter faded did Flawless Bluestone get out, but it was too late and Blur scored her fifth victory of the year in 10 starts for owner Barry Goldstein.

With all the early action Sears said, ?I knew Dave (Miller) was going to go to the front, I just wanted to be the last one on the front, and that?s the way she likes to race. She?s just been really sharp the last two starts.

?She hasn?t raced much since the Hambletonian Oaks, so she?s still pretty fresh,? said Smedshammer, who has won this division three years in a row with Stroke Play, Housethatruthbuilt and Blur.
