Thursday night's lone $15,000(C) division in round two of the Whenuwishuponastar Series at Mohawk Racetrack came down to a final-quarter sprint and it was BM MCW holding on for a hard-fought 1:55.4 victory for driver Paul MacDonell. It was a maiden-breaking win for the rookie daughter of first-crop sire McArdle in just her third career start. Starting from post two in the field of 10, BM MCW was eased away sixth in the early going and watched as stablemate Boo Hanover put up the first fraction in :28.3 after overcoming post 10. Lola Palooza was then sent to the front in a slowing second quarter and took the field past the half in :59.2 before coming under immediate pressure from BM MCW who brushed to command. Then it was first-time starter Woman Rebels taking her shot and actually poking a neck in front past the third panel in 1:28.1. BM MCW refused to give way on the inside and battled back gamely to win by a neck over an equally game Woman Rebels. Lola Palooza finished another length back in third. "She (BM MCW) actually had a lot of pace on the end of her mile last week which surprised me a bit," said MacDonell. "I thought she was coming into a good race tonight. She'll battle, that's for sure. She's still green and she let that other horse (Woman Rebels) come to her and maybe get on a little further than she should have, but she fought back." BM MCW, who was just a $3,500 yearling purchase at the 2006 New Jersey Classic Yearling Sale, is trained by James Wellwood for 1187422 Ontario Inc. of Gloucester, Ont. The $52,000 Whenuwishuponastar final will go next Thursday night at Mohawk. (WEG)
