Bobcat Tops American Ideal

The Primetime Bobcat show continued Saturday night at Woodbine, as the Tony Montini-trained Abercrombie 9 year old was first at every call and rang up a final time of 1:49.1 in the $50,000 Open pace for driver Jody Jamieson.

Making his seasonal debut, and first as an aged horse, Casie Coleman-trained American Ideal finished second after sitting third through the opening half-mile which saw Primetime Bobcat notch the fractions in :26.1 and :55.1.

Driver Mark MacDonald tipped American Ideal first-up before the three-quarter pole came to life in 1:23.2.

Fighting the pacesetter through the lane, American Ideal gave Primetime Bobcat a good challenge in the lane, but there was no denying harness racing’s world record holder, as Primetime Bobcat unleashed a :25.4 final quarter to dispose of American Ideal by a one-half length.

Rair Earth and driver Phil Hudon sat second for the duration of the mile and came out three-wide in the lane, eventually finishing three-quarters of a length back of Primetime Bobcat in third.

“Tony said to me in the drivers’ room before the race ‘this horse has never warmed up better,’ and I just couldn’t believe it,” said Jamieson, who was aboard the gelding for his record mile two weeks ago at the Toronto oval. “The horse just came up with another big effort with a :25.4 last quarter. It’s just unreal when you go neck and neck against American Ideal and put him away.”

The win was the 41st of Primetime Bobcat’s career, and owners Montini, Basil Michele and William and Joseph Rogers saw the gelding push his bankroll to $488,517.

On the season, Primetime Bobcat has assembled a record of 10-2-2 from 16 starts, good for $287,750 in purses. (Woodbine)
