D. Lloyd Mathieson, 90, of Harrisburg, Pa., and Mathieson Farm in Hershey, formerly of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, at his home in Harrisburg.
In recent years Mr. Mathieson bred and raced such top open-class horses as Seagull Hershey p,4, 1:52 ($318,793) and Matt Hershey p,1:52h ($309,091). Seagull Hershey, a son of Western Hanover, finished on the board in 91 of 190 starts before he was retired to stud duty in Prince Edward Island.
Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Mr. Mathieson grew up playing hockey on Prince Edward Island and was instrumental in organizing an all-star team of young Islanders who relocated to Denver in 1935, forming the Denver Americans, the first semi-professional hockey team in Colorado. Mr. Mathieson later played for the Atlantic City Seagulls, but ultimately settled in Hershey, Pa. He refereed for the Hershey Bears and worked for both Herman’s Shoes and the Hershey Foods Co. while attending accounting classes at night.
Mr. Mathieson was graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
After serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II, Mr. Mathieson was offered the opportunity to purchase the Keystone Rug Co. in Harrisburg, which later grew into Mathieson Interiors. He was also the builder and owner of Scottsdale Apartments and Scottsdale Plaza, also located in Harrisburg.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Jean McKinney of Cambodia and California and Heather Coleen Slosar of Lexington, Mass., and five grandchildren, Ted McKinney, Maia McKinney, Magdalena Slosar, Helena Slosar and Louisa Slosar.
A service of remembrance was scheduled to be held Thursday, Jan. 10, in Hershey.
