Liberty Balance, who won the 2001 Breeders Crown 3-Year-Old Colt Trot and was named Canada’s Horse of the Year that season, died Sunday at the University of Guelph after reportedly being found in a field suffering from suspected neurological damage and hypothermia. After appearing to be recovering, colic set in and he was euthanized at the University. The 9-year-old gelding won 20 of his 57 career starts. Unraced at two, he trotted to a lifetime mark of 1:55 at three while capturing his Breeders Crown elim at Woodbine, an effort he equaled when winning the final the following week. He had career earnings of $1,022,595 for owners Tom and Elizabeth Rankin.
