A colt by Metropolitan topped the Breeders Select yearling sale held Monday in the paddock at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, attracting a final bid of $27,000 from Pennsylvania horseman Todd Schadel. The colt, named Sapphire City, is out of Spectre Almahurst, whose offspring include $1.1 million winner Jeremy's Gambit p,2, 1:51.4. Dr. John Hurtgen's Nandi Farm consigned the colt, who also happens to be an embryo transplant.
A total of 74 yearlings were sold at the sale for a gross of $333,800, which resulted in an average price of $4,510.
Nandi Farm also consigned two offspring by SJ's Caviar, a colt and a filly, which brought prices of $16,500 and $12,500, respectively.
Lloyd Arnold signed for a daughter from the first crop of pacing sire Quik Pulse Mindale, who he campaigned on the track, with a bid of $8,200. Consigned by Winbak Farm, Quick Babe is out of the Artsplace mare Expensive Babe, who is a daughter of Laugh A Day, who made harness racing history when Arnold bought her as a yearling for $625,000 at Tattersalls in Lexington back in 1983.
