Brennan, Campbell left out of 2010 NA Cup

With six of the top-10 dash leaders competing on the North America Cup elimination card at Mohawk Saturday night, the drivers’ colony at the Meadowlands has been left a bit sparse. Interestingly, two of those drivers still at the Big M on Saturday and without an NA Cup mount this year are the track’s leading dash driver, George Brennan, and John Campbell, who has won a record six NA Cups.

Brennan, who also stands third in the national dash standings as well as second on the national earnings list, is more popular in New Jersey on Saturday night than Springsteen, Bon Jovi and the cast of Jersey Shore combined. Brennan was listed to drive in 10 of the 11 races on the card. In two of those races he was named on five different horses, while in three other races he has his choice of three horses.

Although Brennan has yet to earn a check in a NA Cup final in four career mounts, Hall of Famer Campbell has been a dominant force in the race that was first known as the Queen City Pace until it was renamed in 1986 and contested at Greenwood Raceway. Campbell has driven in a record 20 NA Cups, with his six wins coming with Precious Bunny (1991), Cam’s Card Shark (1994), David’s Pass (1995), Arizona Jack (1996), Gothic Dream (1997) and The Panderosa (1999).

Since 1989, the only times Campbell did not drive in the NA Cup final was in 1992 when Direct Flight was scratched, and in 2003 when he was sidelined with an injury.

The other drivers remaining at the Big M Saturday from the top 10 and will have a busy plate on their schedule are Andy Miller and Richard Silverman. Among the other drivers apparently likely to benefit by the reduced colony are Corey Callahan, Tyler Buter and Eric Goodell, who recently moved to Hoosier Park but returns to Jersey on Saturday.
