Brian Zendt injured

July 05, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Brian Zendt, 30, was injured during the 11th race Monday night, at The Meadows when his horse Tag After tax became entangled with Mike Wilder and his horse, Mama Sand Tenor. Zendt was flown to a Pittsburgh area hospital. While no serious injuries were immediately known, he was hospitalized for evaluation.

The accident occurred as the horses were passing the half-mile marker; Zendt was just beginning to tip Tag After Tax to the outside. He was going to draft in the cover behind King Rama and driver Ed McNeight, but McNeight’s horse was slowing rather quickly and Zendt attempted to go back in the hole, and that’s when Mama Sang Tenor stepped into Zendt’s sulky, forcing both horses and drivers to fall.

“I fell forward, between my horse and the sulky,” Zendt said from his hospital bed. “I either got tangled with my horses trotting hobbles or the lines.”

“I got hit by Mike’s (Wilder) horse and then when I fell off, I hit on the left side of my head,” Zendt recalled.

“I have some stitches on my right elbow and I had a concussion. The first CT Scan showed a contusion on the front of my brain too,” Zendt said over the phone from the hospital. Zendt also mentioned that a second CT Scan was going to be issued to check for further injuries.

Zendt currently ranks seventh in wins at The Meadows for 2006 and has 1,186 career victories. (Adam Packard for The Meadows)
