When Warrawee Kay got away toward the rear of the field in one of two $12,050 divisions of the John Simpson Memorial for 2-year-old filly pacers Monday night at The Red Mile at least one bettor was likely holding his or her breath as she had $207,767 wagered on her to show. But driver Ron Pierce worked the daughter of Real Desire up first-over, finally taking the lead in midstretch, but then had to fight off an inside rally by Major Harmony and Andrew McCarthy to get the 1:53.2 victory.
Warrawee Kay had two wins and two seconds in five starts coming into Monday's contest, with one of those runner-up finishes coming in her most recent start Aug. 31 in the Kentucky Sire Stakes final at The Red Mile. Both of her victories came in Lexington, including her career-best 1:52.4 set Aug. 31 in a Sire Stakes leg.
Sent off the 1-9 favorite, and with the vast majority of the total show pool of $213,860 placed on her, Warrawee Kay returned to her bridge-jumping bettors a nickel on each dollar--$2.10 for a $2 payoff. The large wager was placed through the New Jersey hub, according to The Red Mile's simulcast and mutuel manager Julie Sorrell.
Steve Elliott trains the winner for owner Alan Keith of Pataskala, Ohio.
