Brigham Dream takes Crown Mare Trot elim

August 23, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The fast but unpredictable Brigham Dream shouldered by a pacesetting Susies Magic in the stretch of the Breeders Crown Mare Trot elimination at Mohawk and Luc Ouellette let her open up to the wire to nail her first win of the year in 1:54.

“I don't think I even picked my whip up, I just showed it to her, Ouellette said post-race. “She was just a trotting machine.
Ouellette handled the 2007 OSS Super Final winner for her regular pilot Jean Pierre Dubois, who may fly in to drive in next week’s US$250,000 Breeders Crown Mare Trot final. Though Brigham Dream bankrolled more than $400,000 last year, she has had a difficult time finding her stride this year. Last month she galloped wildly and did not finish in The Matchmaker at the Meadowlands, but was on her best behavior tonight ad rewarded backers as the favorite, paying $4.60, $3.80 and $3.30.

Ouellette acknowledged that Brigham Dream could be headstrong. “We all know what this mare can do, she's a big strong mare but it seems at times she can be pretty difficult to drive. Mr. Dubois has done a great job with her. At times I've seen her run for a step or two and he'll get her back trotting. Needless to say, I drove her like I was holding eggs on my lap.”

Caroline Gerry’s Bruschette trotted strongly for second, and Vulcanize, trained by the winningest trainer in the 25-year history of the Breeders Crown, Bob McIntosh, was third. Susie’s Magic faded to fourth after grabbing command before the half and cutting the remaining fractions.

Two of the toughest contestants, Falls For You and Godiva Hall, sat out the week as their trainer, Trond Smedshammer, opted for byes on money-earnings. Upfront Hotsey and Freeze Frame did not advance to the final.

The connections of Brigham Dream picked post three as a starting point for next week. The remaining horses received post positions drawn in random order. The complete field in post position order is as follows:
