Brittingham gets 1 year

According to reports, Delaware-based trainer Bret Brittingham has had a three-year suspension handed to him by the state's Harness Racing Commission for a positive EPO test on one of his horses reduced to a one-year penalty. Brittingham will still have to pay the original $5,000 fine. The suspension began Wednesday, May 18.



Brittingham originally lost an appeal to the original ruling, but granted another hearing where the 34-year-old horseman asked the commission for leniency. They reportedly voted 4-1 in favor of reducing the suspension.



Brittingham's horse, Judy's Beach Towel, had an EPO positive after winning a race at Dover Downs Dec. 19, 2004. Brittingham admitted afterward he administered the EPO to the horse several months before the race in an effort to treat him for anemia. Although published reports say Brittingham said the horse has since been sold, the U.S. Trotting Association records still list him, his fiancée Chrissy Crissman, and Richard Wayne Prior II as the owners.
