Broadway Paige, Pennsylvania’s freshman trotting filly champion, flashed that championship form Monday at The Meadows when she captured a division of a $98,000 Keystone Classic in a career-best 1:58.1.
Away third, Dick Stillings sent Broadway Paige on a decisive quarter-pole move that carried her to a 1/2-length victory over the first-up Virgilyn Hanover. Perfect Prelude finished third. Broadway Paige now has earned more than $151,000 and finished off the board only once, when she was bothered in the final of the Peaceful Way at Mohawk.
“That wasn’t entirely her fault, but some of it was,” said Brian Roland, who trains the daughter of Broadway Hall–Financial Paige for Anthony Risi, Carol Risi and Bernard O’Brien. “She was pretty hot and Tim (Tetrick) couldn’t get her ducked, which put her in position to get into trouble. We added earplugs because she’s a little warm. She’s a racehorse. She’ll do it any way you want.”
All Star Hanover, runner-up in the PA championship, was equally as strong in taking the other Keystone Classic division, going wire to wire in an unchallenged 1:58, also a lifetime mark. The pocket-sitting Valeris was second by 3/4 lengths, with Hall of Wishes third.
David Miller, regular driver for the daughter of Cantab Hall-Astraea Hanover, piloted today for trainer Joe Holloway and owners Bluestone Farms and Fredericka Caldwell.
“There weren’t any anxious moments,” Miller said. “She’s been pretty honest, pretty handy right from the get-go. If she grows, maybe gets a little stronger, she could come back and be a nice 3-year-old, too.”
All Star Hanover has won six of nine starts and more than $161,000 and never has been worse than third. Both All Star Hanover and Broadway Paige are being pointed to the Matron.
In the $25,000 Preferred Handicap Pace, Up Front Jerry blazed to the front from post position 7, then cruised to a 2-1/4-length victory for Tony Hall in 1:51.1 Tarver Hanover was second while Winbak Dimensions finished third. Mickey Burke trains Up Front Jerry, a 6-year-old gelded son of Western Hanover-Michelene’s Lair, for Sylvia Burke, John Chiovetta and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. (The Meadows)
