Former chairman of the board of directors of the United States Trotting Association Brooks Wells died Thursday morning at the age of 90.
Mr. Wells, of Ashland, Ky., had a wide and varied career in the sport and industry he loved. He for nearly 40 years he served as a stockholder and lead auctioneer for the Blooded Horse Sale Co.; was an owner, breeder, driver, and trainer; operated Wee Tara Farms; and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Trotting Association for 24 years, from 1979 until stepping down in 2003. In 1988 he was elected and served one year as the USTA’s chairman of the board.
Wells was widely honored during his career: In 1984 he was named Harness Horsemen International’s Man of the Year, and also served for a time as that organization’s vice president; he was named the Kentucky Horseman of the Year in 1992; and was also a member of the Kentucky Harness Racing Hall of Fame. In addition, he was a charter member of the Kentucky Harness Horsemen’s Association. On Feb. 12, 1984, Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins decreed that day as “Brooks Wells Day” in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Away from racing, Wells was the president of Brooks Wells Inc., which had wide interests in real estate and construction. His courtly manner, flowery speech, and “larger than life” tales of racing were enjoyed by all who knew him, and were accompanied by a boundless knowledge about--and dedication to--the sport of harness racing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Irish” Wells, who died in 2004. (with files from USTA)
