Of the four divisions of Pennsylvania Sire Stakes action held at Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack on Thursday afternoon, 3-year-old daughters of Andover Hall found victory. Bruschette was the fastest of them on the day’s program, trotting the mile in 1:56.1, just a tick short of the track record for sophomore fillies. With Pembroke Spice (George Brennan), My Intuition (Eric Goodell), Undercover Lover (Tim Tetrick), and Loch Katrine (Ed Lohmeyer) all leaving from the gate, trainer-driver Jan Johnson was forced to take a back seat early on with Bruschette. Undercover Lover made a break through the first turn, and My Intuition made a miscue just before the quarter.
Moving up to third after the early breaks, Bruschette left the cones just after a half of :59, overtaking Loch Katrine for second past the half. Steadily improving throughout, Bruschette then challenged leader Pembroke Spice just before the three-quarters.
“I saw George (Brennan) wasn’t going to let me go, so I went back into the hole and challenged again”, said Johnson. After three-quarters of 1:27.2, Bruschette retreated back to the cones, pulling the pocket a second time at the head of the stretch and nailing Pembroke Spice at the line.
About Bruschette, Johnson commented, “She’s a good filly. She’s got a good head on her; she wants to win.” The Caroline Gerry-owned daughter of Andover Hall has won six of 21 career races, earning over $73,000 in her career. Caress the Senses (Andy Miller, 1:57) and Beryl’s Flight (Tim Tetrick, 1:58), both by Andover Hall, took other divisions, with Speedy Edie (Dale Hiteman, 1:56.4) by SJ’s Caviar taking the last division.
