Shamelessly not content with his five-win, sweep-the-co-features Friday night at Yonkers Raceway, Tony Morgan went the distance in Saturday night's $30,000 Open Pace with Buckeye One. Morgan grabbed immediate command with the 4-5 people's pal. However, P H Top Dog (Greg Grismore) had the same idea, leaving hard from post potition 4. Buckeye One was in no mood to be sociable, hanging the other leaver through early divisions of :26.4 and a flat 55 seconds. P H Top Dog was understandably one tired puppy soon thereafter, so last week's Open 'Cap winner, Slickest Hanover (Stephane Bouchard), went up and around him going toward the 1:23.3 three-quarters. Buckeye One, not getting a minute's peace, summarily dismissed Slickest Hanover and had a length-and-a-quarter to play with turning for home. He widened to win by 3 1./2 lengths in a zippy 1:51.1, one tick off the track record for aged geldings (Special Report/Maltese Artist) and just two-fifths away from Silver Almahurst's all-age track standard....which has held up for more than 14 years. Pslvuheartbreaker (Jim Meittinis) rallied into second, with Slickest Hanover and Image of Dawn (Pat Lachance) in a heater for third. King Cat Anvil N (Jordan Stratton) closed from last to grab an appearance fee. Buickeye One, trained by Nat Varty for Ontario co-owners Ian Fromowitz and John Fielding, paid $3.60 for his second win in 10 seasonal sojourns. He led a $32.40 exacta, while the triples returned $56 (with Slickest Hanover third) and $44.20 (Image of Dawn third).(Yonkers)
