Bullet Bob leaves Saratoga

January 05, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Veteran race track announcer Bob Meyer recently announced his retirement from Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, and has turned the mike over to Mike Sardella, who served as his back-up announcer for the last four years.

Sardella, a Scotia, N.Y. native, is also known to racing fans as Saratoga's in-house TV and web-site track handicapper, a position he will keep along with his announcing duties. He also has been named Simulcast Director.

"We are very grateful to have had an announcer of Bob Meyer's stature here for the past six years and he will surely be missed", commented VP of Racing Operations Skip Carlson, "and at the same time we feel extremely fortunate to have someone with Mike Sardella's credentials waiting in the wings and ready to step in."

Along with Sardella's back-up race calling duties at Saratoga, he was the full-time announcer at Ocean Downs in Ocean City, Maryland for the past two summers.

Bob Meyer, a Brooklyn native who used the moniker "Bullet" throughout his career, was the track announcer at Yonkers for 27 years before moving to the upstate track.

Sardella, 25, admits that being named the track announcer at Saratoga fulfills a lifelong dream. He will start his new job when live racing resumes on Feb. 2.

Sardella has also appeared as a sideline reporter for Time Warner TV-3 basketball games, has done on-air traffic reports for TWC Cable News 9, been the P.A. announcer for live events at Union College, and is an umpire and referee for local high school baseball and basketball games.
