Bunny Lake retired

Return Home
October 21, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Bunny Lake, the 2001 Horse Of The Year, has been retired from racing. Wendy Spring, who shares ownership of the mare with her husband Skip and trainer John Stark Jr., told Bob Heyden of the Meadowlands that the decision was made after the mare's race at The Red Mile on Kentucky Futurity Day.

"I didn't like the way she came off the track at Lexington," said Wendy. "She was a little gimpy during the race, and then settled down, but when she wound up fourth, we all kind of looked at each other after the race, sat down and had a conference (Wendy, husband Skip, and trainer John Stark Jr.) and we decided it was the time. She was telling us it was time.

"This would have been the last race for her and most of the other mares for the year anyway," Wendy added. "We had originally planned on turning her out and letting her relax and be happy and then bring her back next year. But we decided not to, and we will NOT go back on this."

Bunny Lake went postward 93 times and won over half of those starts for a career slate of 47-20-14. She earned $2,843,476 and is the second richest female pacer, behind Eternal Camnation. Ironically, they both raced for the last time in the same race at The Red Mile.
