On Saturday night at Mohawk three $100,000 divisions of the Burlington provided an annual preview of the North America Cup, and the winners were Shamardal in 1:51.1, Bettor Tuwin in 1:50.2, and Sutter Hanover in 1:50.1.
Sutter Hanover, making just his second start of hte season, was a powerful 5 3/4-length winner for driver David Miller. The 3-year-old colt by Dragon Again settled in third in the first turn, then was sent to the lead by Miller and controlled the rest of the race. In the Irons, already a winner of four of eight starts this year, finished second while Running Brook took third.
Bettor Tuwin, a son of Bettor's Delight who was based in Alberta before shipping to Ontario, enjoyed a second-over trip and won by a neck over the Ohio invader Travis Lou. Tell All rallied for third after starting from post nine. Big Business, who set the pace, faded to eighth.
Bettor Tuwin was bred by Kentuckiana Farms and is owned by Dr. Fred Krusnelnicki of Alberta and trained by Brad Maxwell in Ontario.
Shamardal, bred by Fred Hertrich III and owned by Hertrich and John Fielding, won by 3 1/4 lengths over Sergei Seelster. Making his fifth career start--and of the season--Shamardal lowered his lifetime best with his second career victory.
