Burning Point wins at Mohawk

Burning Point and driver Ron Pierce proved to be much the best Saturday night during the $387,250 final of the Roses Are Red Stakes for pacing fillies and mares, as they tallied an open-length victory in 1:52-flat.

Racing over a course somewhat off due to rain showers, Pierce left from post three with the multi-million dollar daughter of Camluck and tucked into third as KG Katriona blasted to the opening quarter in :26.4. Making the first-over move, Burning Point grabbed the lead before the :55.4 half-mile pole, got a breather before the 1:24 three-quarters pole and jogged home through the stretch, posting a 2½-length win, the 41st of her career.

With driver Dan Dube at her controls, Marnie Hall gave it all she had through the lane, but came up short and had to settle for second.

Miss Galvinator A, who had Luc Ouellette at her lines and was an 81-1 winner in her elimination last week, was 3¾ lengths short of Burning Point.

KG Katriona (driven by Mark MacDonald) and Invitro (Paul MacDonell) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

After her 13th start of the season, on June 9, Burning Point was still winless on the campaign. Although, the Cuzzins Stable charge has now won three races in a row and she chose a good time to start to heat it up.

The 6-year-old bay mare started her streak by winning the $201,000 (U.S.) Lady Liberty at the Meadowlands on June 16, won her $50,000 Roses Are Red elimination on June 24 and now snagged the winner’s share of a $387,250 purse.

“She seems to be the type of mare that gets better as the year goes along,” Pierce said, of the Steve Elliot-trained mare who was apparently named fittingly. “I think she likes racing in the summer more so than in the winter because it seems like she just gets better and better as the weather gets warmer and warmer.”
