Calgary Hanover 2FP upset

October 28, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Calgary Hanover made a stunning late-stretch move to zoom past runner-up Little Miss Dragon and third-place Cabana Fever to win the $600,000 Breeders Crown final for 2-year-old filly pacers in 1:53.2.

Calgary Hanover was driven by Mike Lachance for trainer Don Swick and co-owners Royal Wire Products and United Process Control Co. Swick said using Lachance as a catch-driver is a big factor in the Western Ideal filly's success.

“This is a dreadfully lazy filly and from the first day that Mike drove her he made her race and made her race. She liked finishing second,” Swick said.

Little Miss Dragon went three wide to grab the lead at the :55.2 half. A :27.2 third quarter seemed to be the undoing of Little Miss Dragon as Cabana Fever made an early stretch bid but Little Miss Dragon held on gamely until Calgary Hanover shook free and zoomed by.

Lachance said the cold, blustery winds at Woodbine have made racing tough on the lead.

“With the weather like tonight if you use them too hard early they have to come back at you in the end,” Lachance said.

Calgary Hanover has now made $373,050 in earnings with a line of 12-3-6-2. She was a $27,000 yearling bred by Hanover Shoe Farms.
