California owner arrested after syringes discovered

California-based owner Juan Pablo Ramirez has reportedly been arrested and charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and medications after State Fair police and California Horse Racing Board investigators discovered syringes and 28 bottles of mostly illegal drugs in a room he occupied in a barn at Cal Expo.

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the seized medications allegedly include Class 1, 2 and 3 drugs that are either restricted or banned in California. Ramirez posted bail and was released after his April 3 arrest, and he will now have an administrative hearing before California Horse Racing Board stewards.

According to U.S. Trotting Association records, Ramirez, 32, currently owns one horse, Spicy Hall, and leases another, Flash The Sign, both trained by Dario Solares.

Spicy Hall is a 6-year-old gelded son of Jenna’s Beach Boy who has won twice in seven starts this year for earnings of $3,375. He was purchased by Ramirez last October. Ramirez also leases Flash The Sign, a 10-year-old son of Life Sign who has made 300 career starts. Flash The Sign has one win in 17 starts this year and $4,617 in earnings.
