Corey Callahan, driving pacer Elizabeth Ann, was injured in a freak accident in the first race at Dover Downs on Tuesday night. Callahan was standing up in his bike trying to help his horse by untangling her hobbles, when a horse directly behind bumped into Callahan's sulky, throwing him to the track. Afterwards he complained that his upper arm was bothering him.
Callahan was immediately taken by ambulance to nearby Bayview Medical Center emergency division in Dover, Del. where he was x-rayed. Although he did not have any broken bones, he did not return to the track Tuesday night, but is expected to return to racing later this week.
In addition to dominating the Dover Downs leading driver standings with 235 wins since opening day last November, thus far in 2010, Callahan is second in the North American dash-win standings.
Ironically, a little more than a week ago, Corey's father, Nick Callahan, was involved in a freak accident at his farm track. While completing training of one of his horses while rounding the last turn, the horse stumbled throwing the elder Callahan to the track where he broke his pelvis. He will be sidelined for several months. (Dover Downs)
