Calling all 14 year olds

December 01, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Last year, for the first time in over a decade, Monticello Raceway was able to secure enough 14 year olds to present a race strictly for harness racing’s senior citizens just days before they turned 15 years old and were forced into mandatory retirement.

Called the Au ReVoir Pace, despite the fact that one trotter competed in the wagering affair, the event was presented on Dec. 29, 2005, and was won by the New Zealand-bred pacer, Try Kacy N, who had shipped in from Delaware just for the competition. It was the 19th victory of the year for the Art Brewer- owned pacer and raised the horses seasonal bankroll to $68,050.

Though Try Kacy N, who was handled by Jimmy Taggart Jr., came into the race with very impressive credentials and sent off as the prohibitive favorite, the pacer was all-out to turn back a late charge from Daylon Spirit (Cedric Washington) in a 2:03:4 clocking.

But that was last year and now both equine competitors years living out their years is relative comfort.

Again this season, Monticello Raceway would like to present another race strictly for 14 year olds, which, if it fills, will be presented on Thursday, Dec. 28, the final day of the track’s 2006 campaign.

Anyone with a 14 year old pacer, or trotter, who might be interested in having their horse race one final time before they become ineligible can contact Warner in the racing office by calling 845-794-4100 ext 557; or they can contact the track’s publicity department at ext. 455.
