Cam, cool and collected

Cam Cool lost the lead twice but had it when it counted most in the first of two $17,000(C) divisions in the first leg of the Apaches Fame Pacing Series Friday night at Woodbine.

Randy Waples sent Cam Cool straight to the lead off the wings, but into the first turn Phil Hudon and In The Irons seized the advantage through an opening split of :27.2. Cam Cool re-acquired the lead, but before the half-mile mark (:56.4), Scotian Sunset and Jack Moiseyev were in front.

Scotian Sunset held the edge until deep stretch before Cam Cool collected the lead for the third and final time, drawing off to a 1 ½-length tally over In The Irons, in a razor sharp 1:53.4.

Scotian Sunset held on for third, beaten four lengths.

Lasalle’s Bob McIntosh, who owns and bred a piece of the 3-year-old bay with CSX Stables of Ohio and Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington, trained the unbeaten-in-2007 colt to his third straight win.

The son of Camluck now has career earnings of $18,062.

In the second division, Pray For Luck edged chief rival Sky Tantrum in a battle of the titans.

On paper, it appeared only Pray For Luck and Sky Tantrum could take this stanza of the Apaches Fame. The betting public had the latter as the 4-5 favorite and the former as the 2-1 second choice. No one else was less than 7-1.

But, Pray for Luck was best. The Northern Luck gelding settled in behind horses early through a fraction of :27.2, but as the field approached the half-mile mark (:57.2), he made a decisive move, which was sustained into the stretch. Sky Tantrum took a run at him late, but Pray for Luck would not be denied, winning by 1 ¾ lengths in 1:54.2.

Daylon Hideaway was third, beaten 2 ½ lengths.

Paul MacDonell drove the Ontario-bred to his third career win for his trainer and breeder, Fergus’s Mark Austin, who owns a piece of the bay with Leo Thibodeau of Windsor. Pray for Luck now has seasonal and career earnings of $32,500 from five starts. (WEG)
