Cam Cool set to sweep

Cam Cool is on course to sweep this year's Apaches Fame Pacing Series thanks to a pair of impressive victories in the preliminary legs of the event.

The 3-year-old son of Camluck – Lartesienne sped to a career-best clocking of 1:53.4 last week, and he followed up with a 1:56.1 triumph in Friday night's $17,000 division for trainer Bob McIntosh and driver Randy Waples.

Waples quarter-poled to the lead after stting third through an opening quarter in :27.2. Once in command, the homebred laid down panels of :58 and 1:29 before uncorking a :27.1 final frame en route to a narrow head decision over In The Irons (Phil Hudon).

Pray For Luck (Paul MacDonell), who was a 1:54.2 winner in the opening leg of the series, was just a quarter length back in third.

Sent off as the 4-5 choice, Cam Cool improved his 2007 record to a perfect 3-for-3 for the Robert McIntosh Stables Inc., C S X Stables and Al McIntosh Holdings.

The victory gives the pacer four wins in seven lifetime starts and the lion's share of the purse brings his lifetime bankroll to $26,562.

Daylon Hideaway, who was a determined third-place finisher in the opening leg of the series, swept from the back of the bus to take the second division in a time of 1:57 for driver Jody Jamieson.

Jamieson tucked into fourth in the early going with the 3-year-old son of Island Fantasy – Daylon Happy, but he quickly got shuffled to seventh as the leaders dawdled through a tepid first half clip of :59.3.

The pacer found his way to the outer flow in the third quarter and eventually made a bold three-wide move – a tactic that paid off handsomely for the David Lemon-trainee. The homebred cleared to the lead at the head of the lane and he staved off a late rush from Tymal Cameron (Luc Ouellette) for the 1:57 score.

Hes A Lion (Lyle MacArthur) rallied in the lane to round out the top three while Revallee Gerald (Paul MacDonell), who was sent off as the even-money favourite, had to settle for fourth.

Lemon, who owns and bred Daylon Hideaway, watched the pacer find his way to the winner's circle for the first time this season and the second time in his career. Never worse than third in four start this year, Daylon Hideaway now boasts lifetime earnings of $30,323.

The top 10 point earners from the preliminary legs of the Apaches Fame Pacing Series will have the chance to return to Woodbine next Friday evening to contest the $50,200 final. (WEG)
