Cammie a happy retiree

November 29, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

It's been nearly two months since Eternal Camnation made the last of her 101 career starts, finishing second in the Allerage Mare Pace at The Red Mile and trainer and co-owner Jeff Miller says the retired "Queen" is just now finally settling down to her new routine, which will soon include a date in the breeding shed to Real Artist.

"She's finally starting to tone down." Miller told The Horseman Monday afternoon from his farm in Haviland, Ohio, of the richest pacing mare of all-time with more than $3.7 million in purse earnings. "I had a horse that I was going to sell and I sent her to Toledo to race, a horse that was beside (Eternal Camnation) all year. She just wasn't happy so I went up and got that mare and brought her back. I turned her out with her and that was just what the doctor ordered. She settled right down and buddied up to that mare."

Miller admitted that he and partners Doc and Dorothy Miller are hoping that Cammie's first foal by Real Artist is a filly, and he is a bit nervous about that day in a couple of years when mother and offspring are separated.

"I think by the time we take that first baby away from her, you better be ready. She's pretty protective," Miller said with a laugh. "Remember, I just had to go get that mare just to make her happy."
