Campbell on recovery road

November 09, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Hall of Fame driver John Campbell, home and beginning the road to recovery after breaking his leg in a horrific crash at Woodbine, wishes to extend his heartfelt thanks for all those who have supported him since his accident.

“I want to thank all the people who sent cards, gifts and letters with their thoughts and prayers,” said an emotional Campbell. “I have truly been overwhelmed by the amount of support that I got. I am very humbled.”

Campbell was injured Oct. 21 while driving Scootin Delight in a 3-year-old Colt Pace Breeders Crown elimination. Near the finish line, Total Truth ducked sideways and caused a chain reaction that resulted in Scootin Delight crashing to the Woodbine racing surface. Scootin Delight was ultimately euthanized.

Campbell underwent surgery at Etobicoke General Hospital in Canada to reduce swelling in his leg and was transported Oct. 26 by air ambulance to New Jersey. He underwent surgery at Pascack Valley Hospital to set and stabilize the break on Nov. 2.

Campbell finally returned to his River Vale, N.J., home on Tuesday, and is now ready to begin the rest and rehabilitation that will hopefully take him to a full recovery.

“On behalf of Paula and I,” said Campbell, “I just want to thank everyone.” (USTA)
