Hall of Fame driver John Campbell sizzled on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands, picking up five victories, including the $100,000 Matriarch with Easton Alliance N, who scored in 1:49. He also won both $18,000 divisions of the Hiram Woodruff Series.
In the featured sixth race, the Matriarch, Easton Alliance N [$14.60, $5.00, $2.80] left strong from the gate and yielded to Street Dancer [$2.60] on the backside. Race favorite, Marnie Hall [$2.80, $2.40] challenged first up at the three-quarters and battled Street Dancer through the lane. Easton Alliance N angled out from his cover, charged late for the wire and edged out the competition by a half-length in 1:49.
The 1:49 clocking made Easton Alliance N the fastest down under bred pacing mare of all time. Marnie Hall finished second and Street Dancer was a length back in third. "Nobody else was leaving,” Campbell said. “I did not want to end up fourth over. I didn’t think she could win from there so I decided to take a shot and see if I could get spotted. It worked out well. When Marnie Hall came hard in the third quarter, they opened up a bit on David Miller's mare (K G Delight) and I had room to get out in between them. She seems to be rounding into form. Maybe she likes the warmer weather. She was good today." ”She likes this track more than any other,” trainer Ross Croghan said. “John made the right move and got lucky. She is a closer. Nothing was leaving and he took a chance. She shook loose and loves to close. Everyone is happy. She is going to stay right here. “ The six-year-old daughter of Village Jasper notched her first win of the season in her ninth start and increased her lifetime earnings to $426,222 for owner Katherine Bardis of Pebble Beach, California. In Hiram Woodruff action, Campbell steered to victory Euro Hanover [$2.40, $2.20, $2.10] in the second race and Valley Sport [$2.80, $2.60, $2.40] in the fifth race division. The Hiram Woodruff Series continues next Sunday, March 20 and concludes with an estimated $45,000 final on Monday, March 28.
