Campbell wins in return

John Campbell returned to the sulky Thursday morning in three qualifiers at the Meadowlands, five months after severely breaking his leg in a Breeders Crown elimination. All three horses Campbell directed were trotters, including the $856,000-winning veteran Hez Striking.

The 8-year-old Hez Striking finished fourth for Campbell, who had a sixth with the unraced 3-year-old Hanky’s Hooray in his first qualifying start. Campbell did get a win with Up Front Hotsey, a 4-year-old daughter of SJ’s Caviar, who used a final quarter of :26.4 to rally to a 1:58 victory.

Although Campbell first told harnessracing.com he planned on two mornings of qualifiers before returning to full-time, pari-mutuel action the weekend of April 6-7, following the qualifiers he revealed that because he expected Hez Striking to be entered in the Su Mac Lad Series Sunday afternoon at the Big M his return would be that much sooner.
