Canadian Horse of Year Majestic Son retired

Reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Majestic Son has reportedly been retired after suffering a leg injury, with the 4-year-old son of Angus Hall finishing his career with 22 wins in 38 starts and $1.75 million in earnings. He wrapped up his standout sophomore season in 2006 with a Breeders Crown victory, defeating U.S. Horse of the Year Glidemaster in the process.

Trainer Mark Steacy told Standardbred Canada (SC) Tuesday morning that Majestic Son “hadn’t been himself over the course of his last few starts.” Majestic Son made a break in his last start Aug. 19 in the Trot Prestige at Hippodromde de Montreal.

"He didn't feel right in his left hind and we couldn't find out what the problem was,” Steacy added. “There was no swelling and there wasn't anything obvious that was wrong with him.”

Steacy went on to say veterinarians discovered Majestic Son had splintered a piece of his tibia and had a similar problem in a splint bone. Steacy and the ownership group of the Majestic Son Stable conferred and the retirement decision was made. It is likely Majestic Son, a ridgling, will head to stud duty at Tara Hills Farm.

"I can't watch him go around if he's not 100 percent,” Steacy told SC. “And, if he's going up against the group he has to go up against, he wouldn't be able to do it successfully unless he's at his best. I'm very disappointed because he's given me a lot of really satisfying moments. If he was injury free this year, I believe that he could've done some very good things this year, but you've got to go with what's best.”
