The 2007 Canadian Idol winner Brian Melo will sing the national anthem at the annual O’Brien Awards--a gala Saturday night, Feb. 2, that will honor Canada’s national harness racing award winners for 2007. The Sony BMG recording artist born and raised in Hamilton, Ont., traded in his construction career for a life of music after a successful audition for Canadian Idol landed him a spot on the show. Despite having been considered the underdog at the start of competition, Melo was crowned Canadian Idol on Sept. 11, 2007. His first single, “All I Ever Wanted,” released on Sept. 13, 2007, has since achieved top five status on Canada's national radio charts and his debut CD "Livin It" shipped Gold. Melo was recently nominated for a 2008 Canadian Radio Music Award, presented by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. Melo’s appearance has been sponsored entirely by Horse Racing Alberta, a private not-for-profit corporation established to lead and enable a healthy, vibrant and progressive racing industry in Alberta. Presented by Standardbred Canada, the19th annual O’Brien Awards will be handed out at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Center in Mississauga, Ont. Brian Melo will appear on stage at 7:30 p.m. to sing the national anthem. (SC)
