The Ontario Racing Commission has announced trainer Bill Elliott has been immediately suspended for an undisclosed period of time and trainer Evzen Pindur has been suspended for a period of 10 years, plus two more years for breach of probation, and fined $40,000, for positive tests for Darbepoetin-alfa (DPO), a potent long-lasting form of Erythropeietin (EPO).
Elliott's positive came from an out-of-competition test taken last August on his horse Michelle's Power. Pindur's positive came from an out-of-competition test taken March 18, 2008, on his horse Doughnut Hanover. Both horses are ineligible to race for 90 days, under the terms of the new Horse Positive (Owner Responsibility) rule which came into effect Jan. 31, 2008.
Although the length of Elliott's suspension was not stated in the ruling, it did say, "A further investigation of Mr. Elliott is continuing and the Director may take additional action in this matter."
