Cane elim winner gets 60%

If you were caught off guard by the Cane Pace conditions providing for byes if a certain number of horses entered, don't fret. This is the first year the rules allowed for byes into the $350,000 final at Freehold Sept. 4, which went to the top-two money-earners Total Truth and Feelin Friskie.

The top six in the field of eight going postward Saturday in the $100,000 elimination will advance to the rich final. As an extra incentive for the elim starters, Freehold race secretary Peter Koch told harnessracing.com Thursday morning that 60 percent of the purse will go to the winner, with 25 percent for second, eight percent for third, five percent for fourth and two percent for fifth.

"If you talk to gamblers they are always hesitant on betting the elimination races," explained Koch of one of the reasons behind the extra purse money going to the winner as an incentive instead of allowing its connections to choose the post position for the final.
