Cantab readies for Crown

October 13, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Just three days after scratching Cantab Hall out of the second heat of the Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile, trainer Ron Gurfein has entered the 2003 Trotter of the Year into the Breeders Crown at Woodbine Racetrack in hopes of defending his championship. After finishing fifth in the first heat of the Futurity after leading for much of the mile, preliminary reports from Gurfein's barn were that the sophomore had come up sick, which is why there was some surprise that he was among the 11 Crown entries.

"He had a slight temperature after (the Futurity) but I don't think it affected him," Gurfein told The Horseman Wednesday morning, Oct. 13. "He just threw in a clunker of a race. Remember, everything on the front end, except for Revenue, collapsed that day.

"Trond (Trond Smedshammer with Futurity and Triple Crown champion Windsong's Legacy) weren't going, so why not take a shot?" said Gurfein, who added he plans on training Cantab Hall at The Red Mile Friday morning. He also added that he was pleased that because 11 were entered and that eliminations weren't necessary, he was able to have the extra week to prepare Cantab Hall for the race.
