Cape Cove Daisy showed true grit and determination in scoring a lifetime-best 1:53 mile in the $8,250 Fillies and Mares Winners Over Pace at Pompano Park Friday. Trained and driven to victory by Stephan Lareau for owner Diane Fleury of Ft. Lauderdale, it was the 12th win this year for Cape Cover Daisy, a 6-year-old mare by Ambivalent.

The race started off with Golden Falcon N (David Ingraham) shooting to the lead from post six and cutting the mile with fractions of :27.1 and :55.3 with Evere’s Connection (Bruce Ranger) enjoying the two-hole trip. But as the field raced down the backstretch, Lareau moved Cape Cove Daisy from fourth place first-over and was able to collar pacesetter Golden Falcon N by the three-quarters in 1:23.4.

By the time they reached the top of the stretch, Cape Cove Daisy was home free on the lead and held on at the finish to win by one length over a late closing Maresey Doats (Wally Hennessey) and All Night Long (Joe Pavia Jr.).

Driver Brett Miller scored a Grand Slam Friday, winning four races on the program including the sixth race $10,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace with Wilma Hall in 1:53.3.

The featured race saw four lead change before the half-mile pole as Hyde Park Hussie N (Anthony Napolitano) was first on top then Miller came on with Wilma Hall to take the lead before the opening quarter mile in :28.1. But Kevin Wallis already had Race Me Valerie on the move and they went to the front, but Miller came back again to retake command before the half-mile mark in :56.3.

In the backstretch was when Bruce Ranger moved first-over with Townline Lily and Hypnotize with driver Joe Pavia Jr. followed the outside cover as they reached the three-quarter mile mark in 1:25. But Wilma Hall and Miller proved to be too much as they led the rest of the one-mile pace to win by one-half length. Hyde Park Hussie N was second with Race Me Valerie third.

It was the 10th win this year for Wilma Hall, a 5-year-old mare by Blissfull Hall, trained by Jim McDonald for the Knockout Stable of Margate.
