The rapidly improving 4-year-old gelded pacer Chevie Kodiak posted his second consecutive victory at Pompano Park on Wednesday, lowering his lifetime mark to 1:54.3 while remaining unbeaten in 2008 with a victory in a $3,400 non-winners pace. Starting from post two with Wally Hennessey at the lines, Chevie Kodiak settled briefly along the pylons in third before angling to the outside and advancing on the early leader Wild Willie P (Chuck Connor Jr.) as that one covered the opening quarter mile in :27.4. As the pacers moved by the grandstand for the first time, Chevie Kodiak charged aggressively to the front, seizing control of the race through modest middle fractions of :57.1 and 1:25.3, before entering the lane with a two-length advantage. Chevie Kodiak faced mild pressure from Up Front Rudy (Ricky Macomber Jr.) and Matisse CC (Bruce Ranger) in the final yards, but the result never truly seemed to be in peril, as the Mike Deters trainee continued to pace strong through the wire, prevailing by three-quarters of a length. Chevie Kodiak returned $4, $3, and $2.10 for the victory. Up Front Rudy paid $3 and $3.60 for second, while Matisse CC brought in $3.60 for third. Owned by Mark Rorabeck of Nutrioso, Ariz., Chevie Kodiak has prevailed in five of 10 starts during his career. The son of Cole Muffler, out of the Sportsmaster mare Chevie Value, is a full-brother to stakes winner Chevie Cash, who prevailed in 16 of 36 starts during his career, including 12 of 16 as a juvenile, with $265,078 in career earnings.
